Environmental Responsibility
Distressed cargo represents goods and materials that already exist and have already been produced and transported. Where it is commercially and legally possible, keeping that material in use is generally the better outcome.
The order we generally seek
Each case is assessed on its own facts, but our preference follows this order where it can be achieved lawfully and commercially:
- 01Continued lawful commercial use for the original purpose
- 02Placement in an alternative market or an alternative application
- 03Recovery, including sorting, reconditioning, reprocessing or partial salvage
- 04Recycling of the material or its components
- 05Compliant disposal or destruction where no other route is available
Why the outcome varies
Cargo classification, waste legislation, food and feed rules, dangerous-goods requirements and environmental regulation differ by jurisdiction and can differ between the port of discharge and the intended destination. A route available in one country may not be permitted in another, and a change of classification can move a cargo from one step of the order above to a lower one.
What we do not claim
Not every distressed cargo can be recovered, remarketed or recycled. Contamination, safety considerations, regulatory classification, condition or documentation can leave compliant disposal or destruction as the only responsible outcome. We do not present recovery rates, environmental savings or emissions figures, because such figures cannot be substantiated across the range of cases we handle.
Disposal as a deliberate decision
Where disposal or destruction is required, it is treated as part of the case rather than an afterthought: an appropriate contractor, an appropriate facility and appropriate documentation. Related activity is described under cargo recycling and cargo disposal.
Partners and facilities
Processing, recycling and disposal are generally carried out by independent specialist companies. Those companies are expected to hold the permissions applicable to their own operations and to conduct their activities lawfully, as set out under Supplier & Partner Standards.
